I have a problem with my well, the water seems to have alot of Hydrogen Sulfide in it. I would like to find out if pouring Clorox into the well would help it? I have a deep well jet pump and the top of the well is below ground (somewhere, I have\\\'nt found it yet but I know within a couple of feet where I have to dig). If I remove the cap will I have to reprime it? Also I saw on a diagram that there should be a vent on the top of the well cap, is that correct? I was told by a plumber a couple years ago on how to do this but it was with a pump inside the well ( pouring clorox in it and then running a hose into the well and circulate the water and then leave it sit for a day or two, will this work with a jet pump ( deep well ). Any feed back will help.
Hi Scott
Most buried wells are actually buried in some sort of box usually made of cement. If there is a vent on this well it will be in the box itself. Nowadays, most places these boxes are not done any more and the well is drilled with the casing sticking up out of the ground, using something called a pitless adapter. Much easier in most regards.
You may not have to reprime the well, however, you must make sure that the line you are pouring the clorox down into is not the line with the foot valve or the chlorine will go no where.
Adding bleach to your well should resolve the problem on a temorary basis by oxidizing the hydrogen sulphide and killing most of the sulfide producing bacteria. With many wells it is only a seasonal problem, though.
Hope this helps.
