Water for Health and Home
There are two types of water that should be in your home. Water for your household chores, and water for your health. Healthy water is high in minerals, low in sodium and free from harmful pathogens. Water for your home is soft to aid in cleaning, preventing scale build up and reducing soap scum. Many people have hard water but the choices are difficult. Salt free softeners often don’t work and regular softeners add sodium to the water. But there are ways to have both soft water for washing and cleaning and healthy water for drinking and cooking. Simply follow the steps below:
- Determine your need for a water softener. Are you forever cleaning soap scum and hard water stains? Do you get crusty white film on and around your taps? Most people have hard water, and you need a softener.
- Determine the right sized softener for your needs. Refer to the Water Softener Buying Guide to help you with this.
- When having the softener installed, ensure that the plumber runs a cold water line from upstream of the softener to a tap in your kitchen. Use all water for drinking and cooking from that tap.
It’s that easy to have both water for health and home. By running a cold water line from upstream of the softener to your kitchen, your family can enjoy low sodium water while getting the benefits of soft water for washing everywhere else.
The Taste:
The above still may not solve the problem for taste and odor issues. Many municipal water supplies have safe levels of chlorine in them for disinfection, but the odor and taste may not suite your needs. A simple solution is an activated carbon filter. Activated carbon is very good at removing chlorine, taste and odors from your water supply. Activated carbon is in Brita and other jug type filters, and when choosing a product you should follow two simple rules:
- Does your family drink 3 liters or less a day? Then a good jug type filter will be your best option.
- Does your family drink more than 3 liters a day? Consider purchasing an under the sink type carbon filter with its own tap for an on demand supply of fresh water.
As you can see, having healthy, soft and fresh water is not as difficult as it may first seem.
