When you run your tap and you detect a rotten egg smell, there are two steps you must take.

  1. Determining if the smell is from your drains or the water itself (99.9% of the time it is from your drains)
  2. Taking action to eliminate the source of the odor.

Steps to Determining Source of Rotten Egg Smell:

1.

Find a source of water that you know does not smell like rotten eggs. A good source of water is bottled water.

2.

Using the sink that you notice the rotten egg smell most from, pour the water from your odorless source into the drain of the sink.

3.

Put your nose close to the sink and smell.

4.

If you do NOT smell the rotten egg smell, then the issue is with the water itself.

5.

If you DO smell the rotten egg smell, then the issue is with sewer gas escaping from your drain when you turn the water on.
