Preamble:

Two types of treatment are required, filtration and disinfection. Filtration takes out dirt and sediment, which are both aesthetically displeasing and can shelter bacteria and virus from disinfection. Filtration must also remove protozoan cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia (beaver fever), as protozoan cysts are common in surface water supplies and resistant to disinfection. Disinfection must follow filtration to kill bacteria and virus’s as many filter systems are unable to filter out bacteria and virus.

Requirements of Camping/Portable water treatment:

  1. Filter out dirt, sediment, debris and protozoan cysts
  2. Disinfection for killing/inactivation of bacteria and virus.

Filter Requirements:

  1. Can this filter remove particles less than 2 micron? (smallest protozoan cysts 2 micron in size and greater).
  2. Is this filter small and light enough to be carried with you, situation depending (hiking/backpacking require lighter equipment than cabins etc.).
  3. Can this filter meet water volume requirements?
  4. Can this filter meet total quantity requirements (most filters have a maximum quantity they can filter before plugging up depending on quality of source water).
  5. Can filter cartridges be changed easily and be carried with you?
  6. Is it of a robust design and easy to operate?

Disinfectant Requirements:

  1. Can it kill/inactivate bacteria and virus?
  2. Does it have a long shelf life?
  3. Can it easily be carried with you and applied to filtered water?
  4. Does it leave an aftertaste, if so can you live with it?

Additional:

Don’t buy cheap. WHO (World Health Organization) attributes 80% of all travelling diseases to contaminated water, so make sure you buy reputable products for your trip.
