I have read a lot about the health benefits of alkaline water. Is there any truth to this? Also, I have heard that one can alkalize their own water by adding lemon juice or baking soda. Do you know if this is also true and if it is a good thing to do? thank you
Hello Janet, Thank You for writing in.
From my conversations with chemists and other health care professionals, this seems to be snake oil and the only benefit would probably be the placebo effect.
Alkaline simply means a pH higher than 7. Most water systems provide natural waters with a pH at or higher than 7 anyways - the more neutral (closer to 7) the better, and below 7 can corrode water pipes.
I also imagine that when the few ounces of water most people drink at a time hit your stomach with an pH of about 2, any 'alkaline' properties are thrown out the door.
My personal choice is to just drink tap water - but that is up to you. Generally natural sources (such as tap water which is gotten from the ground or surface waters) or even bottled spring water is the best. They contain naturally dissolved minerals many of which you will find in a multivitamin.
I hope that helps.
