DS Hunt from North Carolina Writes:
There is a product recently on the markey that claims by electroporation of tap water, you can clean & disinfect your home as an alternative cleaning product. www.activeion.com
Please provide some insight. I do not understand how this can be true since there are so many dissolved minerals in tap water. Aren\'t they soaking up those strong bonds between the elements in H2O?
Hello DS Hunt:
In the water treatment technologies I'm aware of, charges are applied to water to separate the oxygen from the hydrogen to produce ozone and hydrogen ion radicals, both of which are very aggressive oxidizers and reducers.
However, the water must be distilled first and the amount of electricity is very high. Looking into these machines you will see a bright blue electric arc from the discharge.
I looked at the website briefly. The words were 'slight electric charge', and then it showed a picture of water before an ion exchange membrane, and oxygen and positively charged atoms which they must mean hydrogen radicals on the other side of said membrane.
I'm not going to say it won't work but I'm very doubtful. It seems like an awful lot of effort, care and maintenance to do something soap can and has been doing for hundreds of years, if it even does work.
If you are looking at a natural way for disinfection, I would consider hydrogen peroxide. It's not as powerful as bleach but it is much more benign - it breaks down into a hydrogen radical and water. Many aerobic bacteria produce it as a natural disinfectant.
I hope I've helped.
