I live in a residential township housing over 2000 people. We have a common R.O plant for drinking water. There are many people here coming up with vitamin b 12 deficiency, specially young people in their 20s or 30s.
We are all vegetarians. The local doctor tells us that we vegetarians get vit. B 12 only from dairy products. But we are facing something like an epidemic with almost 5-10% people with vit. b 12 deficiency. So is there any connection beween the R.O water and leaching of vit. B 12 in our bodies, any research done on this subject?
Thank you for writing, Parthiv
There is no question that R.O. water is caustic and will aggressively seek to dissolve minerals and fill itself with dissolved ions - it's like a sponge that way. Whether or not it has the capacity to make any real damage to the human body in the amounts drank, I don't know, but I have a feeling that it does not.
I am not aware of any specific research done on this issue. You may want to contact the water plant and investigate a re-mineralization process.
I believe that any vitamin or mineral the body needs must come in fairly regular supply. There is also the possibility that you are just not getting enough B12.
I would suggest a study of the willing. Take some of the young people who are suffering from a B12 deficiency and have them drink nothing but bottled spring water or another mineralized source. See if their condition improves over time. If it does not then likely it is not the R.O. water and just that you are not getting enough B12 in your diet. I would first talk to your doctor before performing any tests.
I hope that helps.
