Christina Writes:
Is it harmful to leave a Brita pitcher out at room temperature? Is it the same as having one that attaches to the faucet, which is also at room temp?
Hi Christina
Thanks for writing in.
Brita uses activated carbon to improve the taste of water, by absorbing the chlorine in the tap water. It is an effective method of doing this but there are two drawbacks:
#1 - There is only so much carbon, and it can only absorb so much chlorine #2 - If left for too long, this carbon becomes a good home for bacteria. It contains lots of surface area (the home) and traps nutrients from the water.
Those two reasons make it imperative to follow the manufacturers recommendations and change the filters out at the prescribed intervals.
When you remove the secondary disinfectant, (chlorine), it is a good idea to keep your water in your refrigerator. Just like with your food, it slows bacterial growth and keeps your water fresh for longer. This isn't a problem if you are consuming the water right away like you would with a tap mounted filter - but again you must change the filter out on a regular basis.
Do that, and change the filters on a regular basis, and you will not run into any problems.
I hope that helps.
