Fall asks:

In some part of the world water shortage is a major problem. By sea water desalinating suffecient water can be produced for drinking and agriculture usage too. water can be transported throgh pipes to all part of the world. Apart from politics and finanace any other problem exists ? It will make the deserts green and world a happy and healthy place. Am I correct ?

Fall,

Desalination plants are popping up in more and more places, such as Australia. However, it is very difficult, expensive and energy intensive to desalinate water.

Desalinating water costs literally thousands of times more than treating fresh water.

This is because you either have to pass it through a reverse osmosis filter, or distill it. Both expensive, energy intensive and time consuming processes.

This is why a fresh water supply is such a big deal, and why we are running out of fresh water, because we are taking it faster than the hydrologic cycle can replace it.
